So, hopefully this will be my first post from my blackberry. I'm being ambitions and including a picture.
So I'm not 100% convinced about bringing my bike. I think its a big amount of space in the car, becomes a big security hassle and attracts unwanted attention to the car from thieve types.
The plus side is I can park, ride around, and get back to the car. I can also use it as a shuttle between a town and a trailhead and then just hide the bike in the woods.
Then again, if I ever break down, I'm gonna be thanking my lucky stars that I have an extra set of wheels.
The bike on the outside of the car really does say (positively and negatively), "Hey look at me on a trip" then again it also says to cops looking at my NY plates "Hey, the guy is on a outdoorsie road trip".
Anyway, it also happens to be my bike from about 9th grade. Its a Mongoose Rockadile and it weights 21.8 pounds without the seat, stem or air in the tires... Sounds like a brick, I'll have to look at the weight of a 2010 model Mongoose... Oh wait, Mongoose's website has some crap in their FAQ saying they don't publish the weight of their bikes...
Other details:
It has no suspension, 21 gears, shimano old parts. It is a bike shop bike. Its got to be from when I was 15, which would have been 1994.
Anyway, who's got 2 cents they want to share about the bike so far?
PS. One thing I have really learned this years is that less is more. This has been mainly based based on how my back feels at the end of the day after carrying a pack. Keeping weight to a minimum is going to be an interesting dilemma during the trip. So, you might ask how I'm going to weigh stuff. I picked up the coolest digital hand hanging scale at cabela's for 20 bucks. (www.balanzza.com)
